Eye-Ruler 2: Essilor's Digital Measuring Tool Explained
Essilor Instruments has put a digital measuring device back on the agenda for independent dispensing, and the numbers behind it are worth a look.

What it is
Eye-Ruler 2 is a handheld digital measuring application from Essilor Instruments, built to take precise far and near vision measurements for standard and personalised lenses. Essilor positions it as one of the most widely deployed electronic measurement solutions in optical practice today.
What it does
The device uses 3D reconstruction technology to capture standard and personalised measurements in under a minute, according to Essilor. It includes a Frame Choice module, letting patients compare frames on screen before they commit. It also supports Near Vision Behaviour measurement, a feature Essilor reserves for Varilux XR Series lenses, which assesses how a patient reads and positions material at near distance to fine-tune lens design.
Why it matters for independents
A multiple can absorb the cost of a slow or inconsistent measurement process. An independent cannot afford patients walking out because the fitting felt clunky. Speed and precision at the measurement stage are part of the pitch for paying more to be measured properly rather than guessed at. Equipment like this is one of the few areas where an independent can visibly out-tech a multiple on the same showroom floor.
If you are weighing up where digital fitting tools fit into your investment plan, that is exactly the kind of decision our Grow Independent service helps with.
