Go Independent | Start Your Own Optical Practice
"The best way to keep a prisoner from escaping is to make sure he never knows he's in prison" Fyodor Dostoevsky
Nobody showed you an escape path. We will.
Every year in the UK, optometrists, dispensing opticians and experienced optical assistants walk away from the idea of going independent before they have even started. Not because they lack the skill. Not because they lack the ambition. Not because the numbers do not work.
Because nobody showed them the map.
The established routes are well signposted. Salaried roles with multiples. Locum work. JVP and franchise models that dress up employment as ownership and call it independence. These routes are heavily supported, heavily marketed and designed — whether anyone says so or not — to make other people rich from your expertise, your relationships and your clinical reputation.
Going truly independent is made to feel terrifying. Complicated. Reserved for someone else.
That is not the truth. That is the story the multiples need you to believe.
Independence does not look the same for everyone.
For some it is a practice with their name above the door. Patients who choose them specifically. A clinical identity that is entirely their own.
For others it looks completely different. An optical business they build, staff properly and step back from. A commercial venture that works without them showing up every day. An asset they own rather than a job they have created for themselves. Something that generates income, builds equity and does not require them to be present for every sight test, every frame fitting, every Monday morning.
Both are independence. Both are valid. Both are possible.
The difference between the optical professionals who build either version and the ones who never start is rarely talent or capital or clinical experience. It is almost always information and support — the roadmap that has never existed for this profession until now.
You do not need to figure this out alone.
Whether you are a newly qualified optometrist wondering whether there is a third option beyond the corporate job and the locum register. Whether you are a dispensing optician who has spent years building someone else's patient list and suspects you could build your own. Whether you are an experienced optical assistant who understands this industry better than most of the people above you in the org chart. Whether you want your name on the door or simply want to own something that works without you in it every day —
This is where that conversation starts.
Tell us where you are. We will tell you honestly what is possible, what it costs, what it takes and whether now is the right time.
No sales pitch. No pressure. No agenda beyond helping you work out whether independence is right for you — and if it is, what kind of independence that actually means for you specifically.
