The career conversation nobody is having with you.
Your studies cover the clinical. Your pre-reg covers the practical. Nobody covers what comes next — not honestly and not from the perspective of what is actually possible rather than what is simply expected.
The expected path feels well mapped. Qualify. Pre-reg. Then the choices everyone talks about — a job with a multiple, a JVP pathway, hospital optometry, a role in an independent practice, academia, the locum register.
All valid. All well documented.
What is not well documented is the path beyond all of them. The one where you build something of your own.
What nobody tells you.
That independent practice ownership is open to optometrists, dispensing opticians and optical professionals at every level — not just those with family money or years of experience behind them.
That JVP and franchise models marketed as independence are not true independence. Your name may be above the door. The group owns the equity, sets the framework and take their share. That is not the same thing.
That the decisions you make in your early career shape everything that comes after — and most newly qualified optical professionals make those decisions without enough information about all of the options available to them.
This publication is for you too.
Not just for practice owners. Not just for the already independent. For optical professionals at every stage — including those still qualifying who want to understand the profession they are entering before they are fully inside it.
Read. Subscribe. And if you have something worth saying about the training pathway, the pre-reg experience or the career decisions nobody helps you make — we want to hear from you.
