Eye-Light: Essilor's Dual Dry Eye Therapy Device Explained

Essilor Instruments has added eye-light® to its UK range, a dual light therapy device for treating dry eye disease and other ocular surface conditions.

Made by Espansione Group, eye-light® combines two technologies in one device: Optimal Power Energy Intense Pulsed Light (OPE IPL) and Light Modulation Low-Level Light Therapy (LM LLLT). It's positioned for practices that want to offer dry eye management in-house rather than referring patients out.

What it treats and how

Eye-light® is used for dry eye disease, meibomian gland dysfunction, blepharitis and chalazia.

  • OPE IPL uses calibrated thermal light pulses to reduce inflammation around the eyes.
  • LM LLLT uses specific light wavelengths (photobiomodulation) to heat and unblock the meibomian glands.
  • A treatment course runs to a maximum of four in-office sessions, each around 15 minutes.
  • Treatment is painless, according to Essilor.

Paul Cumber, instruments director at EssilorLuxottica, said the combined approach "enables eye care practitioners to target the root cause of many ocular surface diseases, including dry eye" and helps "strengthen patient trust and loyalty throughout their dry eye management journey."

The evidence Essilor cites

Essilor references the TFOS DEWS III Management & Therapy Report, which recognises combined light therapies as a solution for managing ocular surface disease. The company also cites studies showing results maintained for up to 18 months, and data suggesting LM LLLT alone outperforms IPL alone on tear volume and symptom reduction.

The independence angle

Dry eye is a recurring, long-term patient relationship — repeat visits, repeat revenue, repeat trust. Equipment like this lets an independent practice keep that relationship in-house instead of handing it to a specialist elsewhere. That's a service line a multiple's 20-minute testing slot isn't built to deliver.

Considering what dry eye management could add to your practice? This is exactly the kind of investment decision our Grow Independent service is designed for.
